What’s in a name?

Quad Right derived its name from the word "quad", a term used to define fixed spaces in the first lead-type Linotype machines. The word gradually insinuated itself into the language of "cold type" phototypesetting machines of the 1960's and 70's. Appearing on the keyboards of these early machines, the "quad right" key was pressed when a line of type was to be set flush right on a column, thus filling up the left side of the column with space, or "quads."
